Lock Down Your Mobile Data to Keep Thieves Out

The smartphone has turned the computer into a portable device, connecting everyone together from the office to the field. A wide variety of organizations use the smartphone as a means of scheduling, emailing, communicating, sending files amongst the many possible uses. But, because this information is sent over the air, any hacker can easily pick up unlocked information and use it for nefarious purposes. Following are tips for locking down data and ensuring privacy for employees and customers alike:

  • Utilize a VPN, or virtual private network. A VPN requires a password to log into, and secures data by scrambling the data that is being sent.
  • Encryption, also known as Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is another way to scramble data. SSL is also very difficult to break, and deters the casual hacker.
  • Teach employees to be aware and vigilant about what they send, and where they send it from. For example: don’t send sensitive company documents through the open Wi-Fi network at the coffee shop.
  • Utilize security systems from the home network, such as device monitoring, enabling remote lockout and system wipes for lost devices and ensure passwords are used at all times.

Mobile security is best tailored to the particular needs of a certain type of business. But, taking steps to engage in security can greatly reduce the risk of a data breach.
