Stay Safe During the Holidays with these Cooking Safety Tips

According to the National Fire Protection Association, most home fires begin in the kitchen. Since you’ll be in the kitchen a lot more than usual to prepare for your family’s Thanksgiving feast, keep these cooking safety tips:

  • Don’t leave the kitchen while you’re cooking on the stovetop. It’s important to keep an eye on the food that’s being prepared.
  • Don’t leave your home while the turkey is roasting in the oven.
  • Don’t let kids play near the stove. They should stay at least three feet away.
  • Keep the floor clear of clutter so you don’t trip.
  • Keep knives out of children’s reach.
  • Don’t let electric cords from small appliances dangle from a countertop where a child might grab it.
  • Keep matches and lighters in a high place out of the reach of children
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working.
  • Don’t use an outdoor gas-fueled fryer to prepare a turkey.
