The Health Care Act Brings Major Changes to Health Insurance

Consumers are starting to see the benefits from the changes to health care, thanks to the Affordable Care Act. No longer can insurance companies deny certain types of claims on a whim, and more coverage for other sections of the population. Individuals and families can now buy health insurance and stop worrying about being bankrupted by a hospital stay. Some of these changes are:

  • Pre-existing conditions can no longer be a reason to deny coverage.
  • All health insurance plans have to offer coverage for preventive services with no out-of-pocket costs provided the physician is in-network.
  • Consumers have stronger rights of appeal when an insurer refuses to cover what it considers to be an experimental treatment.
  • Insurers can no longer cancel a policy based on an error, nor can it force the insured to pay back any claims paid out before the cancelation.
  • Insurers now have to submit proposals for rate increases of over 10 percent to a federal review board. They also have to spend at least 80 percent of individual health care plan premiums, or face justification for spending less to the federal government.
