Tips to Make Thanksgiving Preparation Easier

Even though you may have carefully planned your Thanksgiving meal, you may find you’ve run out of or forgotten to buy a vital ingredient. Keep these tips in mind as you cook and clean up from your holiday meal. 

  • If you run out of buttermilk, use plain yogurt or  thinned sour cream. Or add 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup milk and let stand 5 minutes.
  • If you don’t have eggs when baking, substitute 1/4 cup applesauce for 1 egg.
  • You can use butternut squash or pumpkin in place of sweet potatoes in casseroles, soups or gratin-type dishes.
  • Substitute 3/4 cup of confectioners’ sugar or 3/4 cup honey for every one cup of granulated sugar. 
  • Use brown paper or waxed paper in place of parchment paper.
  • Unwaxed, unflavored dental floss can be used in place of kitchen twine to truss a turkey.
