Is Your Car Prepared For The Cold?

Your car requires special attention when the weather turns seasonally cooler. In Colorado it can get pretty cold, so preparing your car for winter is a must.

Colder temperatures make many things more fragile. Have you checked your hoses and belts in the past year? Your antifreeze protection? How old is your battery? Older batteries fail most often when the temperature dips below freezing. While you are at it, make certain your heater and defroster are working properly.

Check your fluid levels

Antifreeze protection can be checked pretty easily with a hydrometer. If the fluid level is low, antifreeze can be added to boost your protection. If the radiator is still full but protection is weak, a full flush and replacement of coolant may be in order.

Your oil does hard work in summer heat. It may be time to replace it with a lower viscosity oil for the colder months ahead.

Check your battery to see that the terminals are clean and free of corrosive buildup. Your battery will need to crank the engine on some very cold starts, so it will need all the help it can get. Have it checked to ensure that it is fully charged. If not, it may be getting weak, or your charging system may need attention. Either way, you are tempting trouble when the temperature drops.

Other fluid levels that should not be neglected are brake system and window washer fluids.

Check tires, windshield wiper blades, belts, and hoses

Your car’s more elastic parts get brittle in the cold. If they are weak to start with, you may be asking too much of them to make it through the winter. Check tires, belts, and hoses for cracks, bulges, and wear. Check your wiper blades by using them and looking for areas that don’t get swept clean.

Restock supplies

You should confirm that you are ready with a good window scraper and something for added traction if you get stuck, such as sand or kitty litter. If you commute long distances make certain to have well-stocked took and first aid kits, and perhaps a blanket and reflective markers in case you are stranded.
