Questions to ask your agent before you buy car insurance

When you step into your insurance agent’s office to buy car insurance, don’t be shy about asking questions. You should understand exactly what your policy does and does not cover. You also want to make sure you are getting the lowest possible premium for the amount of coverage you buy.

Ask about the availability of discounts. Discounts can provide substantial savings on your premium, sometimes as much as 20-30 percent. Some of the discounts you may be able to qualify for include a multi-policy discount, a claim-free discount and a discount for being a safe-driver.

You should ask about the difference in the premium if you choose a low or a higher deductible for your collision and comprehensive coverage. Ask your agent if you need uninsured and underinsured-motorist coverage. If you only have liability coverage and get hit by an uninsured or under-insured driver, this coverage will pay to repair your vehicle.

It is always good to cover all of your bases when you buy a policy. How much will your insurance company pay if your car is totaled? Will your car insurance pay for original manufacturer parts when you file a claim?
